THERE’S gold in accessories, and not only on the catwalk. Designer belts and bags, shoes and sunnies — even collars for pampered pooches — are raking in the dollars for luxury labels.
Goddess gowns may steal the spotlight on the runway and the red carpet, but once in-store, it will be the season’s signature shoes that go walking out the door. For the average customer, accessories are more alluring than designer dresses. A handbag, a scarf or a pair of sunglasses will cost less, last longer and — admit it — is so much easier to show off. After all, there are only so many rich Russians, footballers’ wives, Hilton heiresses and screen sirens who can afford to splurge $40,000 on a croc-skin jacket or $10,000 on a sundress. And even the ladies who lunch will cry over spilt milk if it’s splashed down the front of a $2000 suit.
Gucci showed how much stock it places in the humble handbag when it promoted its accessories designer Frida Giannini this month to design the women’s clothing line as well. (Her predecessor, Alessandra Facchinetti, left after a disagreement with management just two weeks after showing her debut autumn-winter collection in Milan). Born as a leather goods company, Gucci still reaps about 80 per cent of its revenue from accessories. Giannini’s last spring collection, inspired by a floral print in the Gucci design archive, reportedly boosted sales by 24 per cent.
For Gucci’s autumn-winter 2005-06 collection, Giannini has returned to the company’s roots by designing roomy handbags using hand-tinted russet leather, branded (literally) with the Gucci logo. Boxy bags that lock with a padlock, rather like a jewellery case, are crafted from shiny patent leather embossed with the distinctive horse-bit design, in forest green or lilac-grey. Black, knee-high croc-skin boots are clip-closed with what Gucci dubs its silver glam buckle, forged entirely of metal, and silver Gucci medallions dangle from stiletto shoes.
Cleverly, the company is cornering the designer gift market. Baby can be initiated into the world of fashion with Gucci booties, logo-embossed photo albums, cashmere bunny rugs and a little silver box for the umbilical cord. Fashionistas with a pet fetish can pick from a Gucci collar, a jumper or a logoed raincoat designed for the type of pint-sized pooch that doesn’t mind being carted along Rodeo Drive in a shopping tote. High-rollers can play poker on a leather Gucci tablemat that flips over to reveal a backgammon board, or lay bets using embossed casino chips or dominoes stored in a leather box. Gucci isn’t the only label taking a gamble on new accessories. Fendi’s handbags have topped shopping lists since the company launched its baguette back in 1997.
Celebrating the label’s 80th anniversary this year, Silvia Venturini Fendi has designed a grab-bag of accessories designed to appeal to bohemian students as much as Park Avenue princesses.
“I’m so over the cult bag,” she groans, sorting through a tumble of handbags on a table backstage after Fendi’s catwalk show. “I think we need to be a bit more individualistic and a bit less global. The idea now is that everyone has a bag that is different to everyone else’s.”
Fendi’s new-season bags feature the squirrel logo created by her grandmother. Another vintage logo, a two-faced god looking to the past and the present, designed by Karl Lagerfeld in 1980 reappears on silver medallions used as zip-pulls. Tufts of coloured fur embellish some bags, beads are scattered over others and leather versions are laser-cut like the underside of a mushroom, to change colour with the light.
“The form is traditional, like old luggage,” Fendi explains, but the look is more contemporary, with hi-tech finishes. Fendi plans to launch two lines of leather goods and a line of shoes this year.
Loro Piana boasted perhaps the most expensive accessory on show in Milan. For the poshest of picnics, its reversible blanket — cashmere on one side, sable on the other — retails for US$60,000. For mere mortals, the company launched its first range of wallets, keyrings and organisers. Crafted from grainy Norwegian leather and supple calfskin, the collection is as useful as it is decorative.
Fay, too, launched its first line of leather handbags — to accessorise its hallmark range of travel jackets. Sales at its parent company, Tod’s, renowned for its pebble-soled shoes and hand-made handbags, have soared 15 per cent in the past year. In step with the fur fashions seen elsewhere on the catwalk, Tod’s created pony-skin boots textured like astrakhan, and a mink-trimmed serpent-skin purse. Hogan, Tod’s groovier sibling label, showed high-heeled shearling boots that oozed fleece from the top and seams, with an aviator bag to match.
Sergio Rossi went for thigh-high giraffe-print boots and bags. Gonk-like boots sprouted snow-white fur and shimmering shoes were as eye-catching as Blue Mountain butterflies.
Gazelle pelt and coyote fur was crafted into handbags at Salvatore Ferragamo, whose new design team raided the company’s impressive archives for inspiration. The company, founded by an impoverished but imaginative Italian cobbler who became the toast of Hollywood during its glory days in the 1940s and ’50s, still relies on accessories for 80 per cent of its turnover. Golden straps were twisted like chains around the ankle in a glamorous pair of gold-heeled shoes inspired by the 18-carat pair made for a mysterious Australian customer in 1955. Mink tassels swung from velvet evening sandals and high velvet boots.
The luxury leather-goods label Bottega Veneta went back to nature, with flowers blooming on elegant handbags crafted from lightweight kangaroo leather. Delicate flowers were even embroidered on the 11cm wooden heels of black velvet shoes. Leather was braided into handles for evening bags and mobile phone holders.
On the runways, hats are back — again. At Prada, crocheted berets sat perkily over austere black suits, while the models at little-sister label Miu Miu wore black tulle headscarves. Cute conical fur hats were worn like horns at the Just Cavalli show. Giorgio Armani, who wants to focus more on accessories, proposed turban-style and lace-brimmed hats.
Miniature versions of MaxMara’s tie-on fur bonnets would have looked cute on the handful of babies spotted at the Milan shows. Why not cash in on the baby boom on Planet Fashion? Below is the Joy Gucci medium boston bag in black and brown print with dark brown leather trim. I had my doubts on getting this one. At first glance I thought that it was just black when I was browsing through the sale bags at Gucci online. But when I read the description, it read black and dark brown. Hmmm… It’s not like I see Gucci boston bags in black and brown print. It’s very uncommon… which makes it unique but scary at the same time. I couldn’t picture it in real life. Will it look nice in person? Should I get it? Well, I had no worries because if it didn’t look good, I can always return it or sell it to my friends in case someone’s interested. So I went ahead and purchased it for only $379. The original price was $630. So this was totally a good deal.

I got it yesterday. I was anxious to open the box and as soon as I did, I was so happy. It looks so nice in person. The only thing that didn’t make me happy is that it came in a big cardboard box instead of the usual Gucci box. I asked Gucci why it came in an ordinary box and they said that they don’t have a big gift box that can fit the boston bag. And if they place it in their usual gift box, it might get damaged during shipping. I don’t know. What a shame. But anyway, I will still go to the boutique this weekend and complain (since I’m going there anyway). Hehe. As you know, boxes are as important for the bag hag/bag collector.
